I also bought this device for the same reasons randomly at the same time as Luke. I've not found its range to be very good though. My test subject was whispering at about 20 metres though, I'm unclear if it only allows you to hear someone speaking normally rather than someone close who is whispering. I think its ready for the field as it is as if it were used for recon properly its unlikely to take fire. Moving it around could be an issue unless the dish was removed when not in use. Defiantly a milsim item.
